Home » Guide to LinkedIn Headshots
What do your LinkedIn photo and your dream job have in common? If you’re aiming for an international career, pay attention! As the popular saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” which couldn’t be more accurate, especially in the era of high-quality cameras, smartphones, and selfies. Regarding LinkedIn, the most widely used social network by recruiters globally, what should your profile picture, specifically your headshot, look like?
A headshot is a photograph of a person’s face, usually including the shoulders, used in a professional context such as social media, communication outlets, or professional websites. “It can be taken from different angles, either by yourself at home or out on the street,” explains Juliana Fitzgerald of Click Life Moments Photography, a photographer specializing in headshots who conducts most of the photo sessions for Storani clients in Dublin.
Here are some tips from Juliana that will help you think and act professionally during your photoshoot. According to her, forget about being overly casual, avoid accessories, and avoid holding a drink in your hand. Choose a neutral space that helps shape the credible image you need.
The eyes are often called the windows to the soul, making them the most crucial element to capture clearly in your photo. Powerfully capturing the eyes draws the viewer into the picture, establishing a connection between you and them.
“Be yourself in the photo,” emphasizes Juliana. According to the photographer, if you smile often in your daily life, then smile during the session. If you’re a bit more reserved, that’s perfectly fine—stay neutral, just avoid looking stern. “That’s the one expression not allowed in your headshot, especially if the photo is intended to help you land a job interview,” she advises. Regarding makeup or hair, aim for a natural look or keep it as classic as possible. “Trends can make photos look dated,” she adds.
What should you wear on the day? According to Juliana, opting for neutral tones and solid colours is a safe bet for most body types and professional fields. This choice ensures that your face, the main focus of the headshot, stands out prominently.
According to her, while neutral tones are a safer choice, it’s worth being bold to make your profile stand out. “I love vibrant colours, especially for women. For instance, someone with green eyes could enhance their face by wearing a green blouse,” she explains.
It may seem obvious, but make sure your clothes are clean and pressed, and avoid garments with logos or loud patterns.
Juliana believes that this choice should also reflect your personality. Use a wall at home if you prefer photos with a white background.
Urban backgrounds should be explored for those who like a setting or context. “Find a location in the city with natural light that will produce great results. But remember, if you choose an urban background, use the correct camera speed to achieve a blurred background, as the focus should always be on you,” she advises.
One of the most critical aspects is lighting. Ensure the light is evenly distributed on you to avoid shadows that could distract you from your face. According to her, it’s essential to find a spot to photograph in an open shade or near a large window, for example.
Angles are among the most critical factors directly impacting the result, especially in close-up shots. One of the classic concerns mentioned by the photographer is the dreaded double chin, which can be avoided by slightly extending your neck. “For women, the eyes will appear larger and the face more delicate when photographed slightly above. For men, emphasize strength and power by photographing slightly below,” Juliana emphasizes.
Changing your position is also a great ally, as people can appear different when standing or sitting. Therefore, consider your professional field and consider what message you want to convey to interviewers with your photos. For men, placing hands in pockets can create a more relaxed look. Although crossed arms can be seen as a cliché pose for both men and women, it remains one of the most popular, according to the photographer.
“Vary your positions and angles, experiment with lighting, and change outfits during the photoshoot. This way, you’ll have options to impress and switch up your profile,” concludes the photographer.
Your LinkedIn headshot is just one element of your overall profile. To make the most of your profile, ensure your headline reflects your professional identity, your summary showcases your skills and experiences, and your experience section is current and detailed.
Complementing your professional headshot with an engaging background image can make your profile stand out. LinkedIn suggests choosing a background image that represents your work or passions.
Keep in mind that your LinkedIn profile represents your professional brand, so aim for consistency and don’t hesitate to let your personality shine through.
Dress to impress, because like it or not, people judge—it’s human nature. Your appearance will be scrutinized by hiring managers, decision-makers, and recruiters. It’s important to remember that as an expat, you’re often viewed through the lens of being an immigrant, and locals may not always take expats seriously. If you don’t take yourself seriously, no one else will. Start with yourself, set the standard, and command the respect you deserve. Best of luck!
